ITU Sport Development Down Under

ITUs Sport Development team is in Sydney this week for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF), a legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.  ITU was invited to send a Sport Development team for the triathlon competition.  The six ITU Sport Development juniors will be among 1550 athletes from 27 countries set to participate in the AYOF.

This marks the second time triathlon has been part of the AYOF.  In the events inaugural year in 2001, Emma Snowsill, now Olympic gold medallist, and Luke McKenzie won the womens and mens events respectively. 

For young potential athletes, any chance they get to race against top competition is an opportunity not to be missed, said Libby Burrell, Director of ITU Sport Development.  This Olympic Festival environment is a perfect learning school for all the athletes.

ITUs Sport Development team arrived in Australia on January 10th and spent three days in Wollongong acclimating for the event.  They moved to the AYOF Village on January 13th and will be part of formal Opening Ceremony to be held at Darling Harbour the next day.

The triathlon competition will consist of an individual event on January 16th and a team event to be staged the next day on January 17th.  Both will take place at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith.

ITUs Sport Development team consists of six promising juniors from five countries including Serbia, Korea, Zimbabwe, Guatemala, Namibia.  They will compete against teams from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa.

El equipo de Desarrollo Deportivo de la ITU est en Sydney esta semana para el Festival Olmpico Australiano de la Juventud (AYOF), un legado de los Juegos Olmpicos de Sydney 2000. A la ITU se la invit para que participase el equipo de Desarrollo Deportivo en la competicin de Triatln. Los seis atletas junior del Desarrollo Deportivo de la ITU estarn junto con 1550 atletas de 23 pases para participar el los AYOF.

Esta es la segunda ocasin que el triatln forma parte del AYOF. En la prueba inaugural en el ao 2001, Emma Snowsill, ahora medallista de oro Olmpica y Luke McKenzie ganaron las carreras femeninas y masculinas respectivamente.

Para los jvenes atletas con potencial, cualquier oportunidad que tengan de participar en grandes competiciones, es una oportunidad que no se deben perder. El equipo de Desarrollo Deportivo de la ITU lleg a Australia el 10 de Enero y pas tres das en Wollongong, aclimatndose para la prueba. El 13 de Enero se trasladaron a la Villa del AYOF y formarn parte de la Ceremonia de Apertura que tendr lugar al da siguiente en el Harbour Darling.

La competicin del triatln consistir en una prueba individual el 16 de Enero y una prueba por equipos programada para el da siguiente, el 17 de Enero. Ambas tendrn lugar en el Centro Internacional de Regatas de Sydney en Penrith.

El equipo de Desarrollo Deportivo de la ITU se compone de seis jvenes promesas de cincos pases, Serbia, Corea, Zimbabwe, Guatemala y Namibia. Competirn contra equipos de Australia, Canad, Gran Bretaa, Japn, Nueva Zelanda y Sudfrica.
