2012 Photo of the Year - Week Two: San Diego

By Erin Greene | 11 Nov, 2012

In our second instalment of the photo competition, we head to the U.S. where the second ITU World Triathlon Series took place beachside in San Diego. Huge crowds lined the streets to cheer on the elites that saw Brits Helen Jenkins and Jonathan Brownlee score gold.

Jenkins was part of a small eight-woman breakaway on the bike that bolted for the run course with more than a two-minute advantage. Jenkins and Aussie Erin Densham hammered out high speeds on the run nobody could match. Densham powered slightly ahead on the second run lap suggesting she would take her second consecutive WTS title when Jenkins blasted past her. The 2011 World Champion continued to push the pace, finishing an overwhelming minute ahead of the competition for the win. Laura Bennett (USA) scored her second trip to the Olympics when she finished as the highest American in third place. Reveiw the race and video highlights here.

After a seven-month pause in triathlon racing, Brownlee started his season in San Diego with a bang. The Olympic bronze medallist headed into T2 with a giant group of 50 men. Brownlee and Richard Murray (RSA) quickly moved to the front of the run, but the Brownlee signature run speed was too much for Murray and Brownlee scored the top podium position. Behind him, Sven Riederer (SUI) ran down Murray for silver, while the South African took bronze. Review the race and video highlights here.
