Position Description

Title: High Performance Manager
Responsible to: TSA Executive Committee
Role Type: Fixed term employment contract to November 2012
Works with: High Performance team, TSA Excom members and in particular TSA Secretary and Member tasked with Development, TSA staff, athletes, coaches and other stakeholders.
Location: To be decided

 

Purpose:

The main purpose of this position is the provision of managerial, administrative and logistical support for the National Coaches and High Performance teams in the achievement of the High Performance Programme vision and performance goals – the primary goal being a medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Secondly, to assist in improving the standard of coaching in South Africa by conducting coaching courses and presenting lectures, seminars and workshops, thereby transferring coaching skills and broadening the base of coaches of High Performance athletes.

Thirdly, to assist in coaching a limited number of athletes designated by TSA (not part of the High Performance Program).

 

Key responsibilities:

Managerial / Administrative Functions: Management of all operational and administrative demands of the HP Programme Accountability for the high performance strategic planning, annual planning, budgeting, and reporting. Lead the HP activities and achieve the outcomes as described herein. Accountability for all operational requirements of the HP Programme relating to travel, accommodation, anti-doping program, athlete and coach evaluations, athletes’ individual performance plans, uniform orders and delivery, preparation and on-going management of the annual HP calendar of activities. Development and implementation of inclusion policies and other policies required to effectively run the HP Programme Management of the resources and assets of the HP Program Development of effective strategies around ITU points for both individual athletes and the overall programme to ensure maximisation of the number of starts at events, particularly the London Olympics 2012.

Management of athletes’ entry into ITU and other events as required, including waitlists Management of athlete support – including financial and other aspects. Implementation and on-going management of Athlete Contracts. Administration of athlete OPEX and other grants including overseeing applications and payment (if applicable) Assisting and coaching of promising athletes Conduct coaching courses and other activities (seminars/workshops) to raise the standard of coaching, particular competitive coaching. Interact with the Coaches Association to help the Association to improve the service level and standards of their local coaches. Interact with provincial structures to assist with coaches’ training Broadening of the competitive coaches’ base in South Africa. General administrative duties in attending to the above including setting up meetings, taking meeting minutes, reporting etc.

 

Logistics:

Plan, organise and deliver world class logistical support for the HP Programme, athletes, events, camps etc. Provision of best practice services i.e. physiotherapy, psychology, nutrition, medical Sourcing and booking all travel, accommodation and other services required to effectively deliver an optimal training and competition environment for the HP team, athletes, coaches other stakeholders and service providers. Assist with logistical planning and preparation for key events including the 2012 London Olympics Provide local coaches and the Coaches Association with the necessary skills and guidance in coaching competitive athletes.

 

Stakeholder relations:

Work with athletes, coaches and other key stakeholder to develop a unified and supportive environment, with all parties working together towards supporting the High Performance programme and its objectives. Develop effective, appropriate 2-way communication with all stakeholders, including athletes and coaches. Adopt a ‘service centred’ approach with athletes, coaches and other stakeholders to effectively meet HP requirements. Establish a constructive exchange of information, skills and know-how on triathlon coaching

 

Other

Be a constructive and willing member of the TSA, acting at all times in the best interests of TSA and the sport of triathlon. Understand and represent TSA’s brand values, goals, strategies and culture values Contribute to broader TSA activities including strategic planning, team meetings, team functions, etc. Undertake development and upliftment of the coaching standards Other tasks as may be reasonably required by the High Performance Manager

 

Success Criteria / Performance Measures:

This success of this role will principally be measured by: Effectiveness (timelines, quality and budget) of logistical aspects of programme including international athlete participation, camps, events, forums, etc Overall running of HP Programme to budget Completion of managerial and administrative tasks on time and to budget Feedback from athletes, coaches and other stakeholder in HP programme Value added to the standard of coaching and the number of suitably qualified coaches.

 

Desired Capabilities / competencies:

This is a senior role for a highly organised, self motivated, professional person. Key competencies for the role include: Experience in project management, logistics and sport team management. Qualification as a triathlon coach with international experience. A proven track record of international athletes’ results. A ‘can do attitude’ with the ability to self manage, make key logistical and other decisions according to an agreed brief. Demonstrated and proven relationship building and communication skills – athletes, coaches and other stakeholders. Experience and understanding of High Performance sport. Experience in effectively managing a High Performance budget. Copes with changes and adapts accordingly. Solution focused and is stimulated by new ideas and opportunities. Action orientated and results driven. Excellent writing/verbal skills (including computer electronic skills). Good communication skills. Willing to adopt and work within the values of TSA.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Commencement date: 1 November 2009
Hours of work: Full Time
Annual Salary: By negotiation
